Before we can love anyone else we have to learn how to love God well first. Then and only then does the love flow out of us to everyone else the way God designed it to be.
God set the "Love" standard very high. We can love because he first loved us.
1 John 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
He sent his son to save us from ourselves! Now if that's not a polaroid snapshot of love then I don't know what is!
So how do we "love" God well? Its not like we can just send Him a Valentines Day card right?
How does any relationship grow? By spending time with that person of course. Its very important that you understand He doesn't "need" us to love him. He just wants us to. If you don't he isn't going to throw a pity party and drown in His own sorrows just because you didn't love him. But He will miss you. He is jealous for you.
Exodus 34:14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
(If you love this scripture then you'll love this song by David Crowder band: How He Loves)
So to love God well, we have to spend time with him by reading his love notes he put in the bible for us, talking to Him about what's going on with us. He's a good listener by the way. Actually the most patient and loving one I know. We have to listen to what he's trying to tell us, warn us about, protect us from.
He first loved us. Lets give him the love that He deserves right back.
